Appliances through four seasons
Boise has hot, dry summers and cold winters; the National Weather Service describes the climate as semi-arid, with around 20 inches of snow in an average year. NOAA's engineering weather data for Boise records about 78 freeze-thaw cycles a year. Appliances in garages, basements and unheated laundry rooms face both extremes.
Garage refrigerators and freezers
Many Boise homes keep a second refrigerator or chest freezer in the garage. In summer, heat makes them work harder. In winter, cold can confuse refrigerators that rely on a fresh-food thermostat, letting the freezer section warm up while the fridge seems fine. Some models are designed for garage use. Check the manufacturer's recommended temperature range and use a thermometer to make sure the freezer stays at 0°F and the fridge at 40°F or below.
Frozen supply lines
Washers and ice makers on exterior walls, in garages or in unheated laundry areas can have supply lines freeze. A frozen inlet valve or hose can crack and leak when it thaws. Keep laundry areas above freezing, insulate supply lines, and check for leaks after a cold snap before running the washer.
Dryer vents and snow
Clogged dryer vents are a fire risk. Clean the lint screen after every load and have the vent cleaned regularly. In winter, check that snow hasn't blocked the outdoor vent, that the flap opens freely, and that vents passing through cold spaces are insulated and slope to drain condensation.
Basement laundry rooms
Many Boise homes have basement laundry rooms. A washer leak in a finished basement can damage flooring and drywall quickly. Replace rubber fill hoses with braided ones, consider a drain pan or leak alarm under the washer, and turn off supply valves when you're away for an extended time.
Gas appliance safety
If your range, oven or dryer uses gas, have a working carbon monoxide alarm. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside.
Before you hire
Ask Boise appliance technicians what they found and how they confirmed it, whether they carry parts for your brand, what the repair costs, and how long they warranty the work. For gas appliances, ask whether they'll test for leaks after the repair. Look up the business's Idaho registration with DOPL if the work involves installation.
Summer heat and the second fridge
In summer the same garage refrigerator faces the opposite problem. Boise's record high is in the triple digits, and a garage on a hot afternoon can be far warmer than the house. Keep the condenser coils clean, leave space around the unit for airflow and keep it out of direct sun. If the compressor runs constantly and the fridge still won't hold 40°F, have it checked before food spoils.
Repair or replace
Component repairs such as fans, defrost parts, igniters, pumps and belts are usually worth doing on an appliance in good condition. Sealed-system refrigerator repairs and major control boards on older machines often tip the balance toward replacement. Ask for a written price so you can compare.
