Heat waves are hard on refrigerators

Sacramento summers bring stretches of nine or more consecutive days at or above 100°F, according to National Weather Service records. Refrigerators and freezers work harder in that heat, especially second refrigerators and chest freezers kept in garages. Garage temperatures in a Sacramento summer can climb well above what many refrigerators are designed for, and some models struggle or stop cooling properly when the surrounding air gets too hot. If you keep a fridge or freezer in the garage, check the manufacturer's recommended operating temperature range, keep the condenser coils clean, leave room around the unit for air to circulate, and use an appliance thermometer to make sure food is staying cold.

During heat waves, power demand peaks in late afternoon. If you have a brief outage, keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed. Food safety guidance recommends discarding perishable refrigerated food that has been above 40°F for more than a couple of hours.

Dryer vents

Hot summers and long vent runs are a tough combination for dryers. A dryer vent clogged with lint makes the dryer overheat, and lint is highly flammable. Clean the lint screen after every load, have the exhaust vent cleaned regularly, and check that the outdoor vent flap opens freely. Many Sacramento homes have dryers on interior walls with long vent runs to the outside or through the roof; those need cleaning more often.

Electrification and new appliances

Most of Sacramento is served by SMUD, which has been offering rebates for switching from gas to electric heat pump water heaters and heat pump HVAC. Many homeowners making those changes also switch from gas ranges to induction cooktops and from gas dryers to electric or heat pump dryers. Before buying a new electric appliance to replace a gas one, check whether your kitchen or laundry has the right circuit; an electrician may need to add a 240-volt circuit or check your panel capacity. Confirm current rebate terms with SMUD directly before you plan around them.

Winter fog and laundry

In winter, tule fog keeps outdoor air damp for days. Dryers vent moist air outdoors, and a vent with a stuck or missing flap can let cold, damp air back in, causing condensation in the vent or laundry room. Check the outdoor flap and make sure the vent run slopes so condensation drains out.

Older homes and appliance connections

In Sacramento's older neighborhoods, laundry rooms and kitchens may have outdated electrical outlets, gas connectors or water supply valves. When replacing an appliance, replace old flexible gas connectors and rubber washer hoses at the same time, and make sure supply valves turn freely.

Before you hire

Ask Sacramento appliance technicians what they found and how they confirmed it, whether they carry common parts for your brand, what the repair will cost including parts and labor, and how long they warranty their work. For gas appliances, ask whether they'll test for leaks after the repair. Look up the business's California license with the CSLB if the work involves installation.
