Appliance Repair questions, answered
What temperature should my refrigerator and freezer be?
U.S. Food and Drug Administration guidance is to keep the refrigerator at 40°F or below and the freezer at 0°F. An inexpensive appliance thermometer is the easiest way to check, since dial settings don't always match the actual temperature.
Why is my freezer cold but my refrigerator warm?
This often means frost has built up on the freezer's evaporator coil, blocking the airflow that cools the fridge section. Causes include a failed defrost heater, defrost thermostat or sensor, control board, or evaporator fan. A technician can diagnose which part failed.
Why won't my washer drain?
Common causes include a clogged pump filter, a kinked drain hose, or a small item such as a sock or coin stuck in the pump. Check the manual for how to access the filter on your model, and keep towels handy. A failed drain pump is another possibility.
How often should I clean my dryer vent?
Clean the lint screen after every load and have the exhaust vent cleaned regularly, more often if the vent run is long or has bends. Signs it needs cleaning include longer drying times, a very hot dryer or laundry room, and a burning smell.
Is it worth repairing an older appliance?
Compare the repair price with the cost of a comparable new appliance and the age and condition of the one you have. Many component repairs are reasonable; major repairs on older appliances, such as sealed-system work on refrigerators, often tip the balance toward replacement.
Why does my gas oven take so long to heat up?
A weak igniter is one of the most common causes. In many gas ovens, the igniter must reach a certain temperature to open the gas valve. A weak igniter glows but may not light the burner reliably. Replacing it usually solves the problem.
What should I do if I smell gas near my stove?
Leave the house immediately without switching anything on or off, and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Don't return until the utility says it's safe.
Why does my front-load washer smell?
Moisture and detergent residue in the door seal and drum can cause odors. Leave the door open after washing, wipe the seal, use the correct amount of high-efficiency detergent, and run the manufacturer's cleaning cycle regularly.
Why is there water under my refrigerator?
Common causes include a clogged defrost drain, a leaking ice maker or water dispenser supply line, or a cracked drain pan. If the fridge has a water line, check the connection at the back and the valve.
How long does an appliance repair visit take?
Many diagnoses and simple repairs are completed in one visit. If a part has to be ordered, a second visit may be needed. Ask the technician whether they carry common parts and how long ordered parts usually take to arrive.
