Water and appliances
Modesto's drinking water comes from a mix of treated Tuolumne River water and city groundwater wells. Mineral content can vary, and minerals affect appliances that use water. Ice makers, refrigerator water dispensers, dishwashers and washing machines can develop scale on valves, screens and heating elements over time. Signs include slow ice production, low dispenser flow, spotty dishes and white residue. Replacing refrigerator water filters on schedule, cleaning washer and dishwasher inlet screens, and running descaling or cleaning cycles recommended by the manufacturer help. If you're considering water treatment equipment, check the City of Modesto's annual water quality report first so you know what you're treating.
Hot garages and second refrigerators
Modesto summers are long and hot, and many homes keep a second refrigerator or freezer in the garage. When garage temperatures climb, refrigerators work harder and may struggle to stay cold. Keep the condenser coils clean, leave space around the unit for airflow, and check the manufacturer's recommended operating temperature range. An appliance thermometer lets you confirm the fridge is at 40°F or below and the freezer at 0°F.
Dryer vents
Clogged dryer vents are a fire risk anywhere, and long vent runs common in some homes make the problem worse. Clean the lint screen after every load and have the vent cleaned regularly. In winter, tule fog and cold air can cause condensation in vents that pass through unheated spaces. Make sure vents slope to drain, have working outdoor flaps and use metal duct rather than foil or plastic.
Washer care
Front-load washers can develop odors from moisture and residue in the door seal. Leave the door open after use, wipe the seal, use high-efficiency detergent in the right amount and run cleaning cycles. Replace rubber fill hoses with braided ones, and check under the machine for leaks periodically.
Electrification
If you're switching from a gas range or dryer to electric or induction, check whether the kitchen or laundry has the right circuit. An electrician may need to add a 240-volt circuit. Ask your electric utility about current rebates before buying.
Before you hire
Ask Modesto appliance technicians what they found and how they confirmed it, whether they carry parts for your brand, what the repair costs, and how long they warranty the work. For gas appliances, ask whether they'll test for leaks after the repair. Look up the business's California license with the CSLB if the work involves installation.
Repair or replace
Component repairs such as fans, defrost parts, igniters, pumps, belts and door gaskets are usually worth doing on an appliance in good condition. Sealed-system refrigerator repairs and major control boards on older machines often make replacement the better value. Ask for a written diagnosis and price, and ask whether the part is under the manufacturer's warranty.
Recycling old appliances
Refrigerators and freezers contain refrigerant that must be recovered before disposal. When you replace one, ask the installer whether haul-away and recycling are included.
Dishwashers
Dishwashers in homes with mineral-rich water can leave spots and film, and spray arms and filters can clog. Clean the filter regularly, use a rinse aid, and run the manufacturer's cleaning cycle. If dishes still come out dirty, have the spray arms, pump and heater checked.
