Extreme heat and cooling appliances
Fresno summers are extremely hot; National Weather Service records show 69 days at or above 100°F in 2021. Refrigerators, freezers and wine coolers work hard in that heat, and units in garages, patios and outdoor kitchens work hardest. Many refrigerators aren't designed to run in very hot surroundings, and their compressors may run constantly and still fail to keep food cold. If you keep a fridge or freezer in the garage, check its rated operating range, keep coils clean, leave room for airflow and use a thermometer to make sure it's holding temperature.
Power outages and food safety
Summer heat waves bring heavy electrical demand, and outages can happen. During an outage, keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed. Food safety guidance recommends discarding perishable refrigerated food that has been above 40°F for more than a couple of hours. A full freezer holds its temperature longer than a half-empty one. After power returns, a surge can damage electronic controls; a whole-home surge protector installed by an electrician helps protect appliances.
Dryer vents in a hot climate
A dryer pushing hot air into a clogged vent overheats, and Fresno's hot laundry rooms and garages add to the heat. Clean the lint screen after every load and have the vent cleaned regularly. Use metal duct, keep the vent run as short and straight as possible, and make sure the outdoor flap opens freely.
Ice makers and dispensers
Refrigerator ice makers and water dispensers get heavy use in Fresno summers. Replace water filters on schedule, check supply lines for kinks and leaks, and watch for slow ice production, which can point to a clogged filter or failing inlet valve.
Rare cold
Freezes are uncommon in Fresno, with only about 10 freeze-thaw cycles in an average year according to NOAA's engineering weather data. But washers and ice maker lines in unheated garages can still freeze during a cold snap. Check for leaks after a freeze before running them.
Before you hire
Ask Fresno appliance technicians what they found and how they confirmed it, whether they carry parts for your brand, what the repair costs, and how long they warranty the work. For gas appliances, ask whether they'll test for leaks after the repair. Look up the business's California license with the CSLB if the work involves installation.
Outdoor kitchens
Outdoor refrigerators, ice makers and grills are popular in Fresno backyards. Only appliances rated for outdoor use should be installed outside, and even they need shade, airflow and clean coils to cope with summer heat. Outdoor gas grills and burners should be checked for leaks each season with soapy water on connections; bubbles mean a leak.
Repair or replace
Common repairs such as fans, defrost parts, igniters, pumps and belts are usually worth doing on an appliance in good condition. A failed compressor in an older refrigerator, or a major control board in an older washer, often tips the balance toward replacement. Ask for a written diagnosis and price so you can compare.
